In the same series as the Oakwood Press' publication on the railway to Achill, the author hasn't dropped Oakwood's standards with this book.
Volume 1 deals with the planning, construction and outline of the operation of this line. The author sets out the background to Valentia's attempts to be selected as a
packet station on the sea route from the United Kingdom to America and the plans and attempts to build a railway to the town.
Ultimately, the line was built in two stages. Stage 1 saw a line from Farranfore on the Killarney - Tralee line to Killorglin, opening in 1885 with the extension to Valentia
Harbour being built under the Railways (Ireland) Act of 1890 and opening in 1893.
This volume deals with the civil engineering aspects of the line as well as signaling and the run down and eventual closure in 1960. Well illustrated with photos and
maps, it is well worth the asking price.
